This is the wonderful coastal part of the city of Athens, which is about half an hour from the tourist center, the birthplace of humanity. I had traveled to the city before, but I always stayed in the center and for a maximum of two nights.

This time, I decided to discover another Athens and went to the “Saronic” coast of Vouliagmeni, where there are several beaches, seaside restaurants and top 10 tourism options.

In addition, the place offers 5 star accommodations such as the super hotel The Margie, the most iconic in the region and one of the few with the Small Luxury Collection seal. I adore!

How many days to stay in Athens

If you have time, I recommend staying 3 or 4 nights in Athens, so you can explore the different regions calmly before heading to the Greek islands paradisiacal – that was mine and will probably be your case.

The Margi Hotel – History

The Margi was founded by a visionary couple, doctor Doctor Yancos Stavridis and his wife Katy in the late 60s. A-list at the time.

They built the hotel with 18 rooms and soon received illustrious guests such as Greek personalities and international high-class people. This allure and prestige grew, as did the hotel itself.

Today the The Margie it has 89 rooms, welcomes famous Greek and international guests and is managed by the third generation of the Stavridis family.

I loved hearing about the history of the hotel. Most hotels that carry the Small Luxury Collection seal are family businesses, so in addition to guaranteed luxury, you will be surprised by their stories and human values.

Location

The hotel is located in Costa de Vouliagmeni. The location is approximately 8 minutes from the bustling and commercial center of Glyfada. The Plaka district and the tourist center of Athens, where the Acropolis is located, are approximately 30-40 minutes away.

Access via public transport to the Riviera is complicated because the metro is limited outside the center. In that case, you can do what I did during the day. I took the subway + taxi. I made this combo once and it went smoothly.

The amount I spent counting the subway and taxi was approximately 15 euros. The taxi to the center costs around 30 euros.

To go to the airport the value of the transfer cost 40 euros. I hired the service directly at the hotel reception.

Check In

I arrived around 12:30 pm, before the scheduled time (14 pm) and the room was already ready. The check-in procedure was done at the hotel reception quickly. Passport, booking confirmation, basic explanations about the hotel, breakfast times, etc.

Normal procedure with an extra Greek dose of sympathy. At the reception, very cold water flavored with Sicilian lemons. I adore! Unexpected: an upgrade to an executive room, a category above the most basic, called superior. Liked it!

I went up to the fourth floor: a welcome card written in my own hand, almonds and olives (typical of the region) and a delicious room with a balcony-show and a view-wow!

rooms

O The Margie offers several types of accommodation – there are ten categories in total – each room has different details. There is also a villa separate from the main building. A beachfront property with more than 200 meters. Good choice for large families or groups of friends of up to 10 people.

I stayed in suite 409, excellent. Very comfortable king size bed, large beautiful window overlooking the sea, which reinforces and takes advantage of natural lighting, plasma television, closet, safe, minibar, a large table/desk and a delightful balcony overlooking the pool, garden and ocean .

In the bathroom, separate shower and toilet. The refreshing and practically 100% natural amenities are from the Greek Korres. I had never tried it and I loved it. Think about mixing the organic and natural side of Natura with the modern touch of Aesop.

The decoration of the room and the hotel in general is monochromatic based on earthy and sober tones, creating a chic Mediterranean look in contrast to the green and other tones of nature.

Facilities and Areas

There are several beautiful outdoor and indoor environments. There are rooms with closed tables and exclusive for corporate events. The large reception area and anteroom are extremely cozy and feature several sofas, armchairs and artwork. It really looks like a big living room. Outside, nature is the main protagonist by the pool.

What I enjoyed the most was the pool. The pool area is beautiful, full of sunbeds, even in the water. The contrast of exuberant nature with the decoration, combined with the hotel's exclusive perfume and a wonderful playlist form a perfect match to enjoy the whole day there.

I stayed at the hotel for a whole day and only went out at night to enjoy the center of Athens.

Breakfast and Restaurant

The American buffet style breakfast has several Greek and Mediterranean options. Typical French breakfasts such as pain au chocolate and croissant are served on a special table with various other types of bread. Poolside tables are popular, of course.

There is a table with fruits, jams, several options of cheeses and hams, as well as a good selection of cereals, yogurts and juices. In addition to the buffet, there is an egg station that you can choose to taste. I ordered an omelet with feta cheese, olives and tomatoes. Very Greek! Well good!

Coffee is served in the so-called Malabar, the restaurant that operates practically all day, changing the services of coffee, lunch, dinner and brunch on weekends.

In addition to the deliciousness itself. Another good thing about breakfast is the timing. As the Greeks love to party (one of the similarities between us) the schedules are much more flexible compared to Europe. The cafe runs until 11am, but it easily extends, according to the clientele. Dinner runs from 19pm to 2am (according to reservations, season and movement).

Spa

In the basement of the hotel is the Spa – a delightful space reserved for relaxation, aesthetic and body treatments. It is a haven for meditation and wellness open every day from 11 am to 21 pm. There are several options for massages and other services such as manicures and pedicures. The products used in the treatments are from Ila – 100% organic and natural.

I had a half-hour back massage (60 euros). You need to book in advance and I recommend you plan to spend a good time there. In total, I spent about 3 hours in the spa, doing a voluntary and unhurried circuit between the dry sauna, the steam room, the heated pool, the jacuzzi and the sun lounger. Oh, all the best!

Curiosities

The name Margi is a mixture of the names of the hotel's creator's daughters: Maria and Gina. Another familiar touch.
The hotel has the seal and is part of the Small Luxury Collection chain. There are only two hotels with this seal in Athens.
Many works of art and interesting travel articles decorate the corners of the hotel. It is very interesting to observe every corner.
During the summer the hotel promotes some popular brunches. To enjoy all the action, you can book a table for brunch or opt for the day-use to enjoy the whole day at the pool as if you were staying there. The price varies between 35 and 50 euros.
The Margi family has been involved in tourism projects in the Athens Riviera region since the late 60's. New is Krabo Beach – an excellent beach club/restaurant/bar/lounge. Everything is a 10.
