One of the first views of the park.

Choosing the best trail

The park is made up of 16 breathtaking lakes in an area of almost 300 km² of caustic relay. In such a large area there are several trails with different degrees of difficulty. The shortest ones can be done in around 4 hours, but you will certainly stop many times along the way to enjoy the view and take pictures – which can prolong the journey.

The structure throughout the park is very well maintained and the trails well marked. The routes are marked by letters and the best way to choose which one to go is to ask in the park's information room, just say how many hours you have and they will help you with the decision.

The most common trails include a boat ride through the park and back to the entrance on a bus.

Fifty shades of grey, blue and green

Regardless of which trail you choose, get ready for a surreal experience. The waters vary between blue, green and gray depending on the minerals at the time.

When looking at Plitvice Lakes, it's hard to believe that the landscapes didn't come out of a fantasy story writer's head. If you go there in winter, I'm sure you'll start singing “Let it go” as you walk along the snow-covered paths, lol.

Better watch out!

Get ready for long lines in high season (July and August mainly) and don't forget the water, it's insanely hot in the summer and you can't even swim in the amazing crystal clear waters of the Plitvice Lakes.

How to get to Plitvice Lakes National Park

To get to the park you can use the buses that leave from Zagreb, Zadar or Split. The first two take about two hours to the park, so you can catch the bus early in the morning and return in the late afternoon, or even head to your next destination later in the day.

I, for example, left Zagreb at 8 am, I spent the day in the park and went to Zadar on a bus at the end of the day. In the park itself you get information about where to take the bus and what are the timetables. The price of each trip is approximately 50 reais.
