Anus to anus Hvar increases its popularity and is already one of the main tourist destinations in Croatia. The almost 300 km² island attracts visitors not only for its natural beauty, but also for its lively nightlife in high season.
I got there thinking about staying just two nights, fell in love and couldn't leave, got a job in a hostel and stayed for almost three months. My job was to recommend to guests what to do during the day and night on the island. Taking advantage of the experience I had, I will give you some tips on Hvar and what to do there for three days.
When to Visit?
the months of July and August are the busiest on the island with high temperatures, crowded clubs and many yachts anchored in the city centre. In June and September the beaches are quieter and you can get better prices for your stay, all without giving up the fun at night.
What to do in 3 days?
Day 1
After arriving on the island and checking in, relax. The most beautiful beach in town is called Pokonji Dol. It's a little far from the center but worth the walk. You can rent chairs and umbrellas and if you get hungry there are two reasonably priced restaurants.
Tip: If you want WiFi to send that picture of the Adriatic Sea to your friends in España stay close to Restaurante Mustačo, the password is “mustaco1”, but don't say I said it! ?
Towards the end of the afternoon go to the Spanish Fort, a XNUMXth century building that offers incredible views of Hvar. You get there in 10 minutes by going up the stairs in the city center. To enter the fort the price is 30 Kunas (R$ 15), but if you want to save the view from the outside is practically the same.
From the fort you go to the Hula Hula. The busiest bar in Hvar during the day and the best place to watch the sunset. During the summer the sun sets around 20 pm, arrive early so you don't miss the show. You pay nothing to enter, a beer costs around 30 Kunas (R$ 15) and drinks are around 70 Kunas (R$ 35).
at night go to Kiva Bar, definitely the most famous bar in Hvar. It splits into two sides of an alley in the center of town, but after 23 pm the alley itself becomes the bar. The owner of the bar is the DJ and the music is perfect for those who want to dance (and of course it plays “Ai Se eu te Pego”).
You pay nothing to get in (assuming you can get in) and a beer is 20 Kunas (R$ 10), shots 25 Kunas (R$ 13) and drinks 70 kunas (R$ 35).
If you want to try something different ask for a Tequila Boom, 40 Kunas (R$20), a drink with tequila and Bitter Lemon. It's not the drink that attracts attention, it's the way they mix it; you put on a helmet and they hit you on the head several times with the glass, then you drink. Good luck!
Day 2
Wake up early (early in Hvar means around 10 am) because today is the day to see the rest of the island. The best option is to rent a scooter for 200 to 250 kunas (R$100 to 125), they are everywhere but ask your hostel or hotel, they probably have a company that can bring you the scooter for the same price.
My itinerary suggestion is as follows: First stop at the beaches of Milna e Dubovica (the last one is a must), then go to The Old City, the oldest city on the island founded in 384 BC. from there go to Jelsa, another of the island's main cities with excellent restaurants and finally Vrboska, known in Hvar as little venice thanks to the channel formed by the sea that enters the city.
On the way back, take the old road (which is very well maintained) and pass through the lavender fields near the Brush (the best time is the end of June). You will be in this region close to sunset time, get ready for incredible views.
At night you go to Carpe diem beach, one of Croatia's most famous clubs in the small ilha de Stipanska. From 1 am, take a boat in front of Carpe Diem Bar (It's in the port of Hvar, right in the center).
These boats travel from Hvar to the island for free (15 minutes). Once there, you pay the entrance fee from 100 to 200 kunas (R$ 50 to 100) and enjoy the open-air party until morning. They have a pool and if you want you can jump in the sea too, so be prepared (those who aren't prepared after a few drinks end up getting excited and falling into the pool anyway).
Day 3
On hangover day you will meet the Pakleni islands, an archipelago of 20 small islands very close to Hvar. To get there you can rent a boat for six people for 450/500 Kunas (R$ 250). You pilot yourself, you don't need a license or experience.
When you take the boat they will explain how to steer, dock and dock, the rest is up to you. You can rent the boat from 9 am and return until 18 or 19 pm, practically all day. You're the captain, so do what you want as long as you don't sink the little boat.
Don't miss Mills e Palm tree, the most beautiful beaches on the island, and don't forget to stop your boat in the middle of the sea and take a dip, the water's transparency is impressive.
The people who rent the boats usually lend a cooler with ice to put your drink and food. Ask for one, if you don't say anything they won't offer it.
If you don't want to spend a lot buy food at the supermarket for the day, Mlini and Palmižana have good restaurants, but they charge accordingly. If money is no object, look for restaurants Laganini and Palmižana.
Where to eat:
Hvar has great restaurants, although many of them are expensive, there are also options for those who want to try good food at reasonable prices.
Bistro Marinero [R$ 25 to 50] – Right in the center of the city, the restaurant has the best prices for a good meal in Hvar. In the evening you may have difficulty finding a table on the terrace, try to arrive before 21pm or make a reservation.
Dish Tip: Tuna steak ou Mussels.
Fig Cafe [R$30 to 60] – Recently opened, the restaurant quickly became one of the best evaluated in Hvar. The informal atmosphere is great and they care a lot about having the best ingredients, the result is an excellent culinary experience.
Dish Tip: Mexican pulled pork with pico de gallo, sour cream & grilled flatbread.
Gariful [R$50 to infinity] – Excellent location and a great reputation make Gariful the most famous restaurant in Hvar. Don't be surprised if you find some celebrities around here, Prince Harry, Giorgio Armani and Demi Moore among many others have dined at Gariful. If you're willing to spend more for a dinner, this is the place.
Dish Tip: Have money, anything there is good.
How to get to Hvar:
The best option is a speedboat (ferry). Split – Hvar takes one hour and Dubrovnik – Hvar three hours.
A detail, the island is called Hvar and the main city is also called Hvar. When buying your ticket to Hvar from Split make sure you are buying for the city of Hvar and not Stari Grad. If you don't have a choice you can go to Stari Grad (takes two hours) and take a bus to Hvar (20 minutes).
The company operating Split – Hvar is Jadrolinija and Dubrovnik – Hvar is operated by Krilo (they also have a daily ferry to Split). Check the schedules and especially in July and August try to buy at least 5 days in advance if you don't have much flexibility, some schedules fill up quickly.
Where to stay:
The White Rabbit Hostel – Located in the center of Hvar it's the perfect place if you don't want to face stairs (and Hvar has a lot) when you're coming home drunk at night. The hostel has a restaurant/bar on the terrace and organizes boat trips and island tours.
Villa Marija – One of the biggest hostels and one of the best places to meet people. They have a huge terrace and every night they do a “warm up” where they organize games until 22:30 pm and then they take the whole group to the bars in the center.
Earthers – The most relaxed hotel in Hvar, not in the sense of peace, but of atmosphere. You'll feel like you're staying at a friend's house instead of a hostel. They have guitars, a ping-pong table and an amazing view of the sunset.”
