One of the most famous monuments in the city is the Atomium, built in 1958 at the first post-war world's fair. The monument is an immense steel structure composed of nine spheres over 100 meters high.
Brussels' postcard resides in the Grand Place, or Grote Markt, in the historic center. The square is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 17th century. The region has several museums, cafes, restaurants and even the City Hall.
Next to the square is the famous sculpture Manneken Pis: a naked boy peeing. ? Believe it or not this is one of the most iconic statues in the city, with years of history, legends and even more than 600 costumes presented by different presidents of government that can be seen in the Musée de la Ville.
Other historic sights in Brussels are the Grand Sablon Square, which features a 1751 Minerva fountain, Place du Petit Sablon, with a beautiful garden facing Notre Dame du Sablon, a 15th-century Gothic cathedral.
Also, be sure to visit the Cinquantenaire Park which has beautiful fountains, gardens and an Arc de Triomphe. The place was built in 1880 on the 50th anniversary of the country's independence.
And finally, take the opportunity to get to know the Royal Palace of Brussels which is open to the public and free of charge during the summer holidays, between the months of July and September.
