Vaucluse in Provence – Travel Guide

Vaucluse is a mountainous region in the south of France surrounded by a lot of history, wonderful cities, lavender fields, olive trees, Provencal markets and lots of cuisine. Find out what to do on a trip to Provence.

Vaucluse is a special area in Provença of contrasts and many places to visit! I had the pleasure of being invited to explore the region and I will share with you some of my experience of places I visited on my trip through Provença:

That's where I started my adventure, even though it's not part of the territory of Vaucluse, I'll mention it here because it was one of the highlights of the trip. Aix is a special place, with a lot of history and also very busy because the city hosts the biggest and one of the best universities in the country, the Aix-Marseille University. It's a student town, which gives it a different feel from other towns in the area, so bars and restaurants are always buzzing at night.
Getting lost in the alleys of the city was the most enjoyable tour. At every step you take you find something interesting.

2. Avignon

Avignon perhaps it is the main city of the region, located in the heart of Provence, it was the capital of Christianity in the Middle Ages. The famous Palace of the Popes, Saint Benezet bridge (also known as the bridge of Avignon) and the Notre Dame des Doms Cathedral are three of the city's many attractions, which is a must-see destination. The city is also very famous for the Festival of Avignon art, where the whole world visits it in the European summer and dozens of theater stages spread across the city.
Avignon It's a great place to base yourself if you're planning a trip around Provença. I will mention two beautiful and luxurious hotels that I stayed and based on my visit to the region. The first was the Hotel La Mirande and the second, the Hotel d'Europe.

3. Gordes

One of the best parts of making a trip through Provence is to go from one city to another, there are many small towns you can find and one is more beautiful than the other. Gordes is one that caught my attention and along with Roussillon are considered two of the villages that have the famous “seal” of the most beautiful villages in France. Gordes it has small streets and its houses are all made of white and gray stones, giving it a unique charm and an air of traveling back in time. The city is in valley of Luberon built on top of a rock, offering incredible views of the Luberon Mountains. For sunset lovers, Gordes it is an incredible option with views of the castle at the top of the city.

4. Rousillon

Different from Gordes, Roussillon it's colorful. The orange color is a characteristic of the city, it is located in a valley with a huge concentration of ochres and mining in the region was banned in 2002 to preserve the site. Roussillon is the second most visited village in the region of Vaucluse, so be sure to get to know during your trip through Provence.
Once it became a conservation area, the city of Roussillon created a trail for the curious who want to see the ocher up close. The tour consists of two walks so you can see this strange and exotic mixture of vegetation and ocher up close. The shortest tour is a 35-minute walk and the longest, 50 minutes. During the walks you will find information panels explaining some of the magic of the place.

5. Isle Sur La Sorgue

If you're in the area on a Sunday, be sure to head to the small Venice of Provence, so the city of Isle Sur La Sorgue is nicknamed, a small village surrounded by the Rio Sorgue, known mainly for its famous antiques markets, its water wheels and its Provencal fair.
There you will find everything from the tastiest of the region, olive oils, cheeses, salami, dried fruits and much more. You can also find products like Lavender e Marseille soaps, two typical products of the region.
When walking through the city you come across a different water wheel every hour, I believe the city has 12 of them, which give a unique charm to the place.
And finally, the handicraft markets are nationally famous and people from France as well as tourists from different parts of the world visit the place looking for antiques.

6. Lavender Museum

Perhaps the region's main product, lavender is something you'll come across on your trip through Provença, whether at fairs, markets or even in the landscape with lavender fields.
I went to visit Lavender Museum and it was quite an interesting experience. The museum is 20 km from Avignon and the visit is super quick, in it you learn the history of the harvest, the use of the flower, principles of distillation, how to use and even to differentiate lavender from lavandim, the flower that is marketed worldwide as if it were lavender essence . The machinery from different eras was also very interesting and worth a visit! I brought home a bottle of lavender and it smells delicious. For more information visit the website.

7. Cooking Class e Wine Tasting

My last recommendation goes to food or wine lovers! The region has many vineyards and offers cooking classes and wine tasting in different places. I visited a place that calls Domaine des Peyres, in addition to producing its own wine and offering cooking classes, the place also works as an art gallery and offers accommodation options for visitors.
A couple takes care of the place and I was very well received by them, and of course there is nothing better than ending your trip through Provença with a nice glass of wine! For more information visit the website.
