Check out tips on where and what to eat, what are the typical foods, chocolates, wines and the best restaurants in Liechtenstein
Restaurants in Liechtenstein are simply amazing! The typical food of this beautiful country is greatly influenced by its neighboring countries Switzerland, Austria and Germany and ends up being a mix of the cuisine of these countries: cheeses, chocolates and wonderful wines like the Swiss, sausages and potatoes prepared in different ways as in Germany and Austria. In addition, many restaurants in Liechtenstein follow a seasonal menu, according to the local products generated in each season of the year. And since we were there in the spring, we tasted dishes with delicious asparagus!! (Spring is asparagus season in Liechtenstein, just like here in Germany)
In today's post we'll give you all the tips on where and what to eat with the best restaurants in Liechtenstein that we visited. And since Liechtenstein also has wonderful wines and chocolates, we'll give you tips on one of the most important wineries in the country to visit and also on the best chocolate shop in Vaduz!
Cafe – Restaurant Zentrum in Balzers | Restaurants in Liechtenstein
In Liechtenstein, the impression I had is that you can eat well anywhere. I don't know if we were lucky, but we ate very well every day in restaurants in Liechtenstein, including the day we didn't even research the restaurant before going there. The Zentrum restaurant and cafe in the town of Balzers is an example of this.
On our first day, we hadn't planned which restaurant to go to and we had to have a quick dinner, because the movie we wanted to watch at the ”Cinema do Castelo” which is close to Gutenberg Castle would start soon (read about this cinema and castle in our post : Itinerary in Liechtenstein: what to do and main attractions). So we ended up having dinner at a restaurant that was close to the cinema and that seemed to be even simple, but it surprised us a lot, because everything in it was wonderful and with an incredible refinement and refinement of flavors in the dishes. This restaurant was Restaurant Zentrum.
We sat in the outdoor area of the restaurant overlooking the region's mountains and ordered soups for starters. As they work with seasonal dishes and the time we went was spring, I ordered creamy white asparagus soup (my favorite soup in European springtime). The soup was delicious with a perfect balance and finesse of flavors! But even better was the main dish: risotto with white asparagus and green asparagus! I have never eaten such good risotto in my life! And look, I love risotto, I'm one of those people who go for risotto rodizio when I go to Brazil (here in Europe I've never found an all you can eat risotto, so I take the opportunity to go when I'm in Brazil, lol).

Restaurante Wirtschaft zum Löwen em Schellenberg | Restaurants in Liechtenstein
The Wirtschaft zum Löwen Restaurant specializes in typical food from Liechtenstein and the most typical food in the country is called Käsknöpfle mit Apfelmus, which would be our Käsespätzel here in Bavaria (it's a light pasta with a delicious cheese sauce and breaded onions to bring crunch to the pasta) accompanied by apple compote. So we went to try this typical dish in this restaurant, which has it as a main course or in a smaller portion as a starter.
As the Restaurant Wirtschaft zum Löwen was highly recommended to us by the Liechtenstein City Hall and the Marketing and Tourism department of Liechtenstein, which helped us to put together our list of restaurants in Liechtenstein to visit, we decided to try different types of dishes and desserts to make a better evaluation of the place. restaurant here for you. So we ordered the typical Käsknöpfle mit Apfelmus as a starter to try and a truffle soup as a starter. Our assessment: The truffle soup was delicious, without any defects! As for the Käsknöpfle mit Apfelmus, we didn't like the combination of the sweet applesauce with the saltiness of the pasta with cheese sauce. Maybe because we are already used to eating this pasta without mixing it with something sweet, we don't like this combination so much. But the pasta with the cheese sauce was delicious, so we ended up eating it anyway without adding the apple compote to the dish (the compote comes separately so you can eat it with the pasta as much as you want).
For main dishes we ordered an Irish steak with vegetables and pan-seared potatoes and a very typical Austrian dish that is also typical in Bavaria and Liechtenstein: the Schnitzel (breaded veal) with pan-seared potatoes served with fruit sauce red. Our assessment: the Irish steak was wonderful, medium rare, melting in your mouth and the vegetables were prepared in a very different and tasty way: the broccoli and cauliflower had a crust, as if they were breaded and the spinach and carrots were very well seasoned. The potatoes were also very good. Incredible how everything came together so well in this dish and how the flavors and textures of each vegetable were different and went so well together! The Schnitzel was also very good, the breading perfect, dry, delicious and the potatoes with the red fruit sauce combined a lot with the Schnitzel.
For desserts, we ordered Kaiserschmarrn with apple compote (read more about this dessert in our post: Sweets you can't miss in Germany) and vanilla ice cream with whipped cream and local strawberries. Our assessment: the two desserts were very good, the strawberries were very sweet. But what I liked the most was their applesauce. I had already realized from our entrance that the apple compote came as an accompaniment too, which was homemade and is a great differential of this restaurant.
And in addition to everything we tasted that was wonderfully well made and delicious, the Restaurant Wirtschaft zum Löwen is located in the beautiful city of Schellenberg, where there are ruins of two ancient medieval castles (read more in our post: Itinerary in Liechtenstein: what to do and main attractions) very beautiful and from where you can see the mountains and alps of the region exactly where the sun sets. It was one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen the sunset. The place is simply magical! I highly recommend having dinner watching the sunset there. In the area outside the restaurant I found the most beautiful views, so as the weather was good too, we sat in this area. But in the internal area, there are also windows with views of the Alps, mountains and sunset.

Restaurant Berggasthaus Masescha in Triesenberg | Restaurants in Liechtenstein
This restaurant was also highly recommended by Liechtenstein City Hall and the Liechtenstein Marketing and Tourism advisory board as a high-end restaurant and recently appeared for the first time in the Gault-Millau Guide, a magazine that recommends and criticizes high-end restaurants. gastronomy and refinement. So it is a slightly more expensive restaurant than the restaurants in Liechtenstein previously mentioned here, but it is worth having dinner at Berggasthaus Masescha (it is a great option for a romantic dinner too, as it has beautiful views of the mountains and alps in the region).
As a starter, I ordered asparagus soup with smoked salmon and my husband ordered dumpling soup made with bread stuffed with cheese from the Tyrol region (this cheese filling was the great differential of this soup, as it is very typical and common in Liechtenstein and here in Germany, but the dumpling usually comes without any stuffing), on the menu this soup is like: Tiroler Käsepress Knödelsuppe. Our assessment: both soups were very good, pure perfection!!
For the main course, I ordered dorado fish with port wine risotto and he ordered filet with parmesan crust and rösti potatoes. Our assessment: when we ordered my husband's filet with parmesan crust, we didn't believe it would be so good, we asked to try it without any expectations and we were very surprised. Simply great! The parmesan crust was not greasy at all and went well with the fillet. But already my port wine risotto with the golden fish fillet, I was a little disappointed. I don't know if it was because I ordered this dish with the expectation that it would be perfect and the dorado was really perfect and the flavors of the fish with the flavor of the port wine risotto matched perfectly too. But the grain of the risotto did not arrive at the ideal point, it was a little lacking and that disappointed me, because I expected to be “THE” risotto, lol. Despite this, I would still go back to this restaurant even to try other famous dishes of the house that I believe is better than the risotto I ordered and which, in fact, is not one of the most famous dishes of this restaurant. Tip: if you have the opportunity, you can try, for example, their Cordon Bleu or Kalbsgeschnetzeltes nach Masescha Art (two famous dishes of the house and typical Swiss, but well consumed in Liechtenstein too).
For dessert, I ordered it like a petit gateau, on the menu it says: Warmer Schokokuchen mit Flüssigem Kern and he ordered an apple pie (Apfelstrudel). Our assessment: both desserts were perfect. You can ask for one of these two without fear! Tip: I would recommend ordering Apfelstrudel, because petit gateau we can eat well in many restaurants in Brazil, but apple pie as good as theirs is hard to find in Brazil.
In addition to serving wonderful and highly refined food, this restaurant is located in the beautiful city of Triesenberg and has an outdoor area with beautiful views of the Alps and mountains, but also an indoor area with windows with these same views. As it was a little cold on the day we were at this restaurant, we ended up sitting inside, but the table was next to a huge window with beautiful views! Tip: we booked a table at this restaurant and asked to be at a table with a window and a view of the Alps and mountains. So I recommend making a reservation at this restaurant to guarantee a nice seat, just like we did.

Hofkellerei wine house and winery in Vaduz | Restaurants in Liechtenstein
The Hofkellerei winery and winery belongs to the Royal family of Liechtenstein and is one of the most important wineries in the country and one of the oldest as well. The winery has beautiful views of Vaduz Castle and the Alps and mountains and is located next to your wine house. So we visited both the winery and the wine house at once and did a wine tasting as well.
The tasting we did was of 2 different types of wines: a white wine and a red wine from them and it was free, as we had the Erlebnispass (read more about this ticket in our post: Itinerary in Liechtenstein: what to do and main attractions). We liked the wines so much that we bought one to take home and I now regret not buying more! We bought a sweeter white wine from the 2016 vintage. It was very good!!

Chocolateria Dolce in Vaduz | Restaurants in Liechtenstein
The Dolce chocolate shop is very famous throughout Liechtenstein and it was very easy to find out why it was so famous. As soon as I entered the chocolate shop, I felt a wonderful smell of chocolate, in addition to being amazed by the store, which is so cute! Talking to the owner of the store, I discovered that her chocolates are handmade, produced right there in Vaduz, in Liechtenstein and that many recipes are copyrighted and can only be reproduced by her! Too much, right?
I bought several pralines, many with fruit, others with caramel that the owner of the store herself recommended and they were all wonderful! They melted in your mouth and were just the right amount of sweet. I also got a chocolate caramel bar as a gift from the store, which I loved too! And we liked it so much that we wanted to go back there to buy more, but there was no time and when we went back to the store the next day, it had already closed. But that's ok, I have one more, among many other reasons to return to Liechtenstein. I really intend to go back on a romantic date (Valentine's Day or wedding anniversary), because Liechtenstein exudes romance – I think you can see that from the (MANY) photos in my posts and on Instagram about this beautiful country, right? LOL.
